When should you book a fertility appointment?
You don’t need to have all the answers before getting started. Many people book an appointment if:
- they’ve been trying to conceive for 6–12 months without success
- they’re over 35 and want early advice
- they have known fertility concerns (such as endometriosis, irregular cycles, low sperm count, PCOS or previous pregnancy loss)
- they’re considering IVF, egg freezing, donor treatment or other specialised management
- they’d simply like personalised advice about their fertility.
An initial appointment is about understanding you, your health, your goals and your options.
How do I book an appointment with Newlife IVF?
You can book directly with a fertility specialist or contact the Newlife IVF team and we can help arrange your specialist appointment:
If you choose to contact the Newlife IVF team, we’re happy to:
- talk through many of your initial questions
- explain what to expect at your first appointment
- help organise an appointment with one of our fertility specialists
- check whether there is earlier availability than what is currently showing online.
If you can’t find an appointment online soon enough, please call, email or submit an enquiry. We’ll do our best to arrange a short-notice appointment with one of our specialists.
Do I need a GP referral?
Yes. You will need to obtain a GP referral before you attend your appointment and bring this with you to access any available Medicare rebates. If you don’t have a Medicare card, you can still book with our fertility specialists, but you won’t be eligible for a rebate.
If you don’t have a referral yet, you can arrange an online, doctor-led telehealth appointment through Hola Health or HeyDoc to obtain your fertility specialist referral. Our team can also suggest other ways to get one quickly, so your appointment isn’t delayed.
Once booked, our doctor’s rooms will confirm your appointment and send you everything you need to prepare.
What should I bring to my first fertility appointment?
To help your fertility specialist prepare for your consultation, please bring (or send ahead):
- Your GP referral
- Your Medicare card
- Any private health insurance details (if applicable)
- Copies of previous test results (blood tests, scans, semen analysis or past fertility treatment records)
- A list of current medications or supplements
If you don’t have any test results yet, that’s perfectly fine, your fertility specialist will guide you on what’s needed next.
What happens at your first appointment with a fertility specialist?
Your first fertility consultation is thorough and focused on you. During the appointment, your fertility specialist will:
- take a detailed medical, fertility and lifestyle history
- review any tests you’ve already had
- discuss all fertility treatment options available based on your individual situation
- explain recommended next steps, which may include further investigations or treatment.
It’s important to know that IVF is not always the first or only treatment option. Depending on your circumstances, there may be other ways to help you move forward, and your fertility specialist will talk these through so you can make informed decisions.
For many patients, this appointment provides clarity and reassurance, even before any treatment begins.
What happens after the initial fertility appointment?
After your first fertility appointment, you may be asked to:
- arrange specific blood tests or scans
- book follow-up appointments
- contact the team at Newlife IVF to commence treatment planning
- complete a Newlife IVF registration form, which will initiate a Newlife IVF team member contacting you and guiding you through the next steps.
If IVF or another assisted fertility treatment is recommended, we’ll carefully explain what this treatment involves, as well as the treatment timeline, associated costs and the types of support available to you.
