Our genetic counsellors’ role in your fertility care

Genetic counselling can assist in a variety of ways, including:

  • Identifying potential genetic health risks – gathering and analysing family and medical histories to assess the likelihood of passing on inherited conditions
  • Assessing inheritance patterns – evaluating genetic conditions and how they may be transmitted to future children
  • Providing information and education – explaining genetic conditions, their symptoms and their potential impact in clear, understandable terms
  • Discussing testing options – outlining available genetic tests, including carrier screening, diagnostic testing and preimplantation genetic testing (PGT), along with their benefits and limitations
  • Interpreting test results – helping individuals and couples understand genetic findings and their implications for family planning
  • Exploring reproductive options – advising on fertility pathways such as PGT, the use of donor eggs, sperm or embryos, and other assisted reproductive technologies
  • Offering emotional support and counselling – helping individuals and couples cope with the emotional and ethical considerations of genetic testing, while guiding them through complex choices about family-building, fertility treatment and risk management
  • Coordinating care with specialists – working closely with fertility specialists to ensure a comprehensive and personalised approach to your care.

Where indicated, genetic counselling plays an important role in fertility care, helping you understand and navigate genetic considerations with confidence. Our genetics team is here to provide clarity, support and expert guidance at every step of your journey.
